Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach border each other at Atlantic Avenue, and a darling 'Beaches Town Center' has risen there.

Frank and I had a fabulous lunch at Poe's Tavern, then ice cream at Peterbrooke Chocolatier, and finished off with Starbuck's. We didn't need dinner!

Here is Frank with the Turtle outside Poe's. Poe's Tavern is one of two - the other is in Sullivan's Island, SC, the place where Edgar Allan Poe served in the Army for a brief time. Their hamburgers are GREAT!

We like this area because it's not too congested. We tried to eat at Joe's Crab Shack at Jax Beach, but we couldn't even get a parking space!

That worked out for the best because I was really in the mood for a hamburger and Poe's Tavern is probably the best hamburger at the Beach.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Salem Massachusetts

St. Peter's Episcopal Church was the first Episcopal congregation in New England, founded in 1733 after permission was granted for religious groups other than Congregationalists to have worship services. Phillip English donated the land for St. Peter's Church. The original 1733 building was taken down to build the present stone one in 1833. True to early 1800s custom, the church has 'pew boxes' with doors that close. Our niece was married in this historic building a couple of weeks ago and we really enjoyed the history and beauty of this Church. One other note: the steps are not built anywhere close to today's code They are very high, both at the entrance and in the rear on the way to the Parish Hall - always the Realtor side kicks in :)

The Lowdown on Pirates in Northeast Florida

This weekend is the annual Shrimp Festival in Fernandina Beach, which begs the question - what about the pirates?

You will see them walking up and down and there are Pirate events - the Best Pirate Contest and the Pirate Invasion.

Most of them belong to one of two Pirate Club Groups in our area.

There is the Fernandina Pirates Club, who bill themselves as "Amelia Island's Goodwill Ambassadors to the World." These Pirates dress more authentically.

Did you know the Pirate eye patch has a purpose? Or is it a myth? Google it to find out!

Later in the year, Nov. 9-11, 2012 is also the annual St. Augustine Pirate Gathering.These pirates dress however the heck they want to - authentic or costume, the choice is left up to the indiviual Pirate.

Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival 2012

The 48th annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival in downtown Fernandina Beach is this weekend and if you have never been, you don't want to miss it! And if you have been you don't want to miss it!

The food is great, the crafts and artwork are first rate, and the Pirates!

The Pirates parading around are the best part. They love it and so do we! There are two basic Pirate Groups - your Fernandina Group and your St. Augustine Group. One of them is more authentic and one is more fun a la Johnny Depp.

Here is the Schedule, so take some time and run up to Fernandina Beach for the Shrimp Festival!

Kirkin of the Tartan

This Sunday, April 22, at 5:00 PM, St. Michaels and All Angels Anglican Church will hold a Kirkin of the Tartan. The St. Andrews Society and the Clay Pipes and Drums will join them for this historic service.
 
There are varying stories as to the origins of this Service, one dating back to the 1700s during religious persecution and one giving the Reverend Peter Marshall credit, who was Chaplain to the Senate and the subject of the book A Man Called Peter. It is said that he was trying to encourage Scottish people during World War II to fight for England.

We think this is going to be a very special service and a blessing to many. Come join St. Michaels and All Angels for the Kirkin of the Tartan this Sunday, especially if you are of Scottish descent!
